Resolved Question: Why do People in America insist on calling all asians chinese?

25 June 2010, 6:06 am

I'm japanese and sometimes I would hear "won ton" or anything having to do with chinese food or what they may have heard on Nauruto or some anime. I used to live in a predominately white school and there were very few asians. I was asked constantly, "do you know Min?" or "Do you know what they are speaking?"and if I didnt know they literally thought I was being a jerk. I DO NOT KNOW. I WAS ADOPTED!!!! not only that but min is LAO! Sadly A lot of people don't even know what that is. I grew up with little to no knowledge until I met my birth mother. I experienced Tokyo and osaka. So gladly I got first hand experience with my culture. Still, Why is it so hard to learn more on different cultures. Just by traveling I realised how so many of us american people have little respect for it in general. If you defend your culture you are known as overly sensitive. I was called chinese and should go back to china. When I correct people of my heritige I am overlysensitive. No! you are just uneducated! Thank you for your responses. Gerry d.- hey! I think you may have misunderstood. I am asian I do not mind being called that. You are white I "assume" you could care less too. Yet I am not Chinese. You are half Irish and half belgian, yet you are not italian. What if everyone assumed every white person was italian and would talk in a funny accent saying "i lost my meatballa". See how ridiculous that can be? lol I think I'm going to make a blog about how to decipher a korean from a chinese person. In my culture it can be pretty easy but all people look at is eyes. I mean you can tell the difference between indian and japanese right? lets not be so lazy on the rest of us asians lol! Whoa saffron I think you've got a little upset but I think you missed the point. I had no intentions in making people focus on the fact that I was adopted. I just stated my personal experience and letting people know that I did not grow up in a japanese houshold. Thats the reason why I stated that. I agree with spanish speaking individuals as well! thanks Hi mod! I try not to make a deal of it since its not such a biggie. I don't think its as offensive as canadians getting confused with us americans. But whatever i'm not canadian I have no idea i'll find out. So yeah I can understand where you are comming from. thanks.... Read More »
